Joe Garner joined Nationwide as CEO in April 2016, inspired by the Society’s principle of mutuality and service ethos. Consumer-focussed organisations have been at the heart of Joe’s working life. Since joining Nationwide, Joe’s mission has been to inspire colleagues to remain true to the Society’s social purpose; using the power of the collective to improve people’s lives. Joe is passionate about Nationwide’s core purpose of ‘building society, nationwide’. Joe studied Geography at Magdalene College, Cambridge and then went onto spend his early career with consumer products companies, Procter & Gamble and Dixons Carphone. Joe then joined HSBC in 2004 where he progressed to lead HSBC’s UK retail and commercial businesses as Head of the UK. Then, in 2014 he became CEO at Openreach, the UK’s digital infrastructure provider and part of the BT Group. Joe also has experience of building his own online based start-up 18 years ago. Joe is the chairman of the British Triathlon Trust who are the official charity of British Triathlon, and bring free, fun events to children of all abilities. He lives in South London with his wife and son. He enjoys fitness, including Tennis and Cycling.
